Received a letter from Comm HS 99, October 26, regarding the extremely low attendance for student attending North and South.  DuPage has some of the highest taxes, highest paid administrator and teachers, but yet low attendance in our public hs?  Mable our tax dollars are going to the wrong place?  This is a community issue, not just for families that have children in the public school.  The letter should be brought to the attention and printed in the public paper for all to see.  The national average for student absenteeism is 5-7 days a year.  Comm HS attendance last year in the first semester students were absent 15 or more days.  That is triple the national average.  This is everyone's business and something needs to be done.
Please share your concerns regarding this issue.  What is our super and principles doing to address this and why is the public not aware of this??

Mary,

I apologize for not seeing this earlier! Please let me know if you would like this printed in our next issue. You raise some extremely valid points and all of us here that live in DG should be concerned.

I understand your concern about the attendance, and the administration and where the money goes. Actually our teachers are not paid extremely high, Bollingbrook has much higher pay than Downers grove.   From what I have seen here in Downers Grove and what I know about other districts our schools are nothing special.  I do not understand why the school board pleads that they have no money, we have a good industrial district and a nice size commercial area's.

Where do you want to publish the letter?  How do I sent it to you?  Thanks for the interest.

I feel the need to correct a few postings that I just read on this thread.
Downers Grove teachers are paid well above the state average.  The average teacher in Dist99 makes $79k per year. That is $20k above the state average.  Nationally the average teacher makes $48k per year.  75% hold master's degree and average teacher has 14 years of tenure.  Our teachers do pretty well as compared to many towns in the state and the country for that matter.  I will admit they are not the highest paid but paid very fairly for now.  Now the tax issue.   Our taxes in DG are the lowest in Du page.  We have the lowest property taxes in Du page and some of the lowest in the state.  Out sales tax is almost more than a percent lower than our buddies in Cook county.  Our School districts are funded well.  They need to sharpen their pencils and get down to the business of fiscal responsibility and not big spending.  More dollars doesn't help children learn in most cases.  Good and dedicated teachers, staff and administrators with the help of good parents help kids learn.  I have no problem with helping the school system pay for capitol projects but I would like them to keep a balanced approach in the process.

one other observation if I could so indulge.

Attendance is the parents responsibility.  You need to get these kids to school.  My parents stressed attendance to me and my brother and it worked out well.  Many parents these days seem to think that the system should baby sit their children.  I 100% disagree.  Parents need to take an active role in their child's education and attendance.  Period.
